Bluewater fishing is heating up with blackfin tunas, wahoo, dolphin, and a few sailfish. Anglers following the currents and eddies in the Gulf are also finding some blue marlin, white marlin, and swordfish.
Good visibility near shore has made for some excellent sight fishing around Egmont Key for cobia. The channel leading out of Tampa Bay into the Gulf has been a longtime holding location for good numbers of cobia as well as tarpon.
The channel markers hold plenty of bait and whenever you find spotted eagle rays or other rays, it’s a good idea to check for cobia that follow. Those same channel markers and buoys will hold tripletail so don’t pass up the opportunity to check them out. A medium to medium/heavy action spinning rod will take almost any tripletail we have off the beaches.
Speaking of the beaches, don’t forget to run the swim buoys along the beaches as well. While they get checked frequently by early bird anglers, they can still be productive at almost any time.
